I have made tortilla soup about 50x (making the stock just beforehand in a pressure cooker). After trying to recreate the exact perfection I remember from so many family vacations to Mexico City on weekends in my youth, your recipe is solid. I recall eating it at VIPS on cold nights, and all the strange garnishes you left out. Two garnishes you might love, that I always do are to take those dried anchos, cut them into rings with kitchen scissors and panfry. They will be crispy, sweethot, black, and like the fried tortilla strips texture, they add a nice crisp/softening bite to each spoonful (and leave you with a wonderful chili oil to add to your tortilla frying oil). Fresh pork rinds are also a garnish. I buy the Cacique (or other brand) queso fresco and crumble it just before lading the soup over. I also garnish with a little bit of crema. Thank you for all the lovely recipes on your site. I'll be trying Calas soon!
